SCGOV MEETINGS & Public Workshops:

Friends and Neighbors of the Fruitville 210 Community Alliance, June 2010
We need your support on an important community development issue!!! On June 22, 2010 the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners discussed whether or not to transmit the "Fruitville Initiative" Comprehensive Plan Amendment 2010-02-G to the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) for review. At the request of our Alliance and many residents from the East Richardson Road neighborhoods, the Board deferred their vote until this Wednesday, July 14th. We were given additional time to work with County Planners and developer representatives to revise language in the amendment that would protect the public interests, primarily the rural character of the neighborhoods and the Urban Service Boundary (USB). We still have several concerns and issues; however, our revisions saved the USB and provided additional protection for specific neighborhoods (Rural Heritage) along east Richardson Road.
Despite our sincere efforts and after meeting with many area residents to discuss the revisions, we discovered that a majority of them still objected to the transmittal of the comp plan amendment at this time. The reasons for their objections are as follows:
1) Intensity and public safety issues relating to congestive traffic
2) Interconnectivity roads that would adversely affect the rural
character of the area east of I-75/Exit 210
3) Lack of credible public input and an incomplete charrette process
4) Concerns about not having a DRI study conducted
5) Building heights on the properties that lie adjacent to the
residential neighborhoods
6) Illustrative plans that show "big-box" type developments within
the study area
There are other issues, but the list above summarizes the immediate citizen concerns. We consider the area to be the true "Gateway to Sarasota." Anything developed at that location should be a reflection of our community and enhance the rural character of the surrounding neighborhoods. It is extremely important that ALL interested parties take a legitimate role in the planning process. Our Alliance remains committed to open dialogue and support any "cohesive" project that accomplishes our mission to build a better community.
Please ask our County Commissioner's NOT to send this comp plan amendment to the DCA at this time by emailing them at:
It would be a great testimony for you to come to the public hearing at 1660 Ringling Boulevard on July 14th around 10 am. Thanks for your support.
Sincerely, John Krotec
