Our staff would like to send a reminder to the community about the
Sarasota County Fertilizer and Landscape Management Code.

For the Do-it-Yourselfers it is important to remember:
· With certain exceptions no fertilizer containing nitrogen or phosphorous
may be applied to turf or landscape plants between June 1st and September 30th.  This is our rainy season and much of the fertilizer that is applied simply washes away - and into our waterways;
· No more than 1/2 pound of phosphorus per 1,000 square feet of turf or landscape plants may be applied each year.  Each application may not exceed 1/4 pound per 1,000 square feet;
·  Nitrogen fertilizer must contain at least 50% slow release nitrogen;
·  No more than 4 pounds of nitrogen may be applied per 1,000 square feet each year;
· Broadcast spreaders must be equipped with a deflector shield;
·  Fertilizer may not be applied within 10 feet of any waterbody or wetland, neither can it be applied to areas like sidewalks and driveways unless it is swept up, or blown onto landscaped areas;
· Grass clippings and vegetative debris must be disposed of properly.  It cannot be dumped into a storm drain, or ditch, and it cannot be left in the gutter.

For folks who hire a landscaping company all of the above applies, plus:
·  Commercial applicators must have taken (and passed) a Sarasota County-approved Best Management Practices (BMP) training program;
· Commercial vehicles must display the Training Certification Decal, and;
·  Each technician must have a certificate and/or a wallet card as proof of training.
